Kendra

“HEY, ERIC, HOW’S EVERYTHING going?”

“Kendra... things are good. I’ll just have my usual.” He says then turns his eyes back to the work in front of him. That is odd. Eric is never short with me. He’s normally flirty, well, he does what he considers to be flirting. Sometimes it’s brutal to watch him flirt, he’s awkward and nervous all the time. But tonight, he seems aloof and confident. I take a seat across from him and wait for him to look up at me.

“What’s wrong, handsome? You’ve been here every night I’ve worked for the past week and have ordered the same thing every time. What's going on?” I ask gently as I place my hand on his forearm. His eyes instantly snap to where my skin meets his and I can see his expression change from frustrated to hopeful.

“I have to make sure that I maintain my favorite customer status.” He says joking like he normally does.

“You’ll always be my favorite.” I lie.

In reality, he kinda freaks me out but I can’t say that. He just doesn’t know how to socialize, especially with my gender. Eric looks over his shoulder at the table Nick is sitting at before glancing back at me, his voice turning slightly angry. It’s like he’s trying to hide the anger but I can hear it in every word that passes his lips.

“I think those two guys are well on their way to being your favorites. What are they friends now?”

“I’m not really sure. Landon is my neighbor and we’re friends. Nick is...” I can’t find the words to describe Nick. He’s so much more than a friend, I really don’t know how to explain it.

“Is he your boyfriend?” Eric asks, the shock evident in his voice.

“Umm... kinda, I guess. Things are new, we’re not really labeling it.” I say truthfully because there’s no reason to lie here. If nothing else, maybe this will show Eric that I’m not actually available. Over the past week, he seems to be a little too interested in my life and what I do outside of work. Maybe if he thinks I have a boyfriend then he will back off a little.

“I knew it.” Eric mumbles under his breath. He starts to quickly pack up his things, growing angrier and angrier as he moves. “I have to go.” He grits out through clenched teeth and I wince knowing I caused this.

“Stay for dinner... it’s on me.” I practically beg, I hate that I hurt him. That was not my intention at all.

“I’m not your charity case, Kendra.” He snaps as he picks up his bag and stomps out the door. My chest aches knowing I just caused Eric this sort of pain but I can’t keep giving him false hope. Sooner or later I was going to have to draw a line between us, it just sucks to actually do it.
