Kendra
âHEY, ERIC, HOWâS EVERYTHING going?â
âKendra... things are good. Iâll just have my usual.â He says then turns his eyes back to the work in front of him. That is odd. Eric is never short with me. Heâs normally flirty, well, he does what he considers to be flirting. Sometimes itâs brutal to watch him flirt, heâs awkward and nervous all the time. But tonight, he seems aloof and confident. I take a seat across from him and wait for him to look up at me.
âWhatâs wrong, handsome? Youâve been here every night Iâve worked for the past week and have ordered the same thing every time. What's going on?â I ask gently as I place my hand on his forearm. His eyes instantly snap to where my skin meets his and I can see his expression change from frustrated to hopeful.
âI have to make sure that I maintain my favorite customer status.â He says joking like he normally does.
âYouâll always be my favorite.â I lie.
In reality, he kinda freaks me out but I canât say that. He just doesnât know how to socialize, especially with my gender. Eric looks over his shoulder at the table Nick is sitting at before glancing back at me, his voice turning slightly angry. Itâs like heâs trying to hide the anger but I can hear it in every word that passes his lips.
âI think those two guys are well on their way to being your favorites. What are they friends now?â
âIâm not really sure. Landon is my neighbor and weâre friends. Nick is...â I canât find the words to describe Nick. Heâs so much more than a friend, I really donât know how to explain it.
âIs he your boyfriend?â Eric asks, the shock evident in his voice.
âUmm... kinda, I guess. Things are new, weâre not really labeling it.â I say truthfully because thereâs no reason to lie here. If nothing else, maybe this will show Eric that Iâm not actually available. Over the past week, he seems to be a little too interested in my life and what I do outside of work. Maybe if he thinks I have a boyfriend then he will back off a little.
âI knew it.â Eric mumbles under his breath. He starts to quickly pack up his things, growing angrier and angrier as he moves. âI have to go.â He grits out through clenched teeth and I wince knowing I caused this.
âStay for dinner... itâs on me.â I practically beg, I hate that I hurt him. That was not my intention at all.
âIâm not your charity case, Kendra.â He snaps as he picks up his bag and stomps out the door. My chest aches knowing I just caused Eric this sort of pain but I canât keep giving him false hope. Sooner or later I was going to have to draw a line between us, it just sucks to actually do it.
